Mid-Year Momentum for Executive Teams

by Keith Abraham

As we approach the end of the financial year and the midpoint of the calendar year, there’s a unique window of opportunity for executive leaders.

The most effective CEOs and senior teams don’t wait until Q4 to course-correct. They pause now. Not to slow down… but to speed up with clarity, cohesion, and intention.

This is the time to reflect on what has been achieved, reset priorities, and refocus leadership energy on the goals that will have the most significant impact between now and December.

This isn’t about goal setting. It’s about creating Unstoppable Velocity, the mindset and momentum required to lead with focus and finish strong.

Why Now? Because Momentum Without Direction Is a Liability

The first half of the year has likely been full throttle, with a focus on delivering strategies, responding to market shifts, and managing the daily demands of business. But too often, speed replaces strategy. And when momentum lacks direction, teams burn out instead of breaking through.

This is your opportunity to stop not because things are broken, but because breakthroughs require breathing space. The mid-year checkpoint gives leaders the perspective needed to:

  • Reconnect with purpose
  • Realign with strategic goals
  • Refocus energy on execution

A Framework to Align, Accelerate and Achieve

In my work with thousands of leaders globally, I recommend a simple but powerful model for mid-year strategic clarity:

1. Reflect on What’s Working (and What’s Not)

As a leadership team, ask these questions:

  • What’s one thing we’ve achieved in the past 90 days that we’re proud of?
  • What did that teach us about the business, the team, or ourselves?
  • How are we feeling as a leadership group, energised, stretched, or overwhelmed?

These aren’t soft questions; they’re performance indicators. Honest reflection enables effective recalibration.

2. Reset Priorities and Remove Clutter

Now ask:

  • What do we need to start doing that we’ve been avoiding?
  • What do we need to stop doing that’s no longer adding value?
  • What’s one goal or priority we thought we’d achieve by now, and why hasn’t it happened?

Resetting isn’t about doing more. It’s about removing the noise, the distractions, and the non-essentials that dilute focus.

3. Refocus Using the HOW Formula

Here’s where direction becomes momentum. Use this formula to ignite renewed clarity:

  • How do you want to feel about your leadership and organisation in the next 90 days?

    (Inspired? Organised? Purposeful? Confident?)

  • One specific goal that will make that feeling a reality.

(Be specific. Vague goals deliver vague outcomes.)

  • Why is that goal essential to your strategy or success?

    (List five meaningful reasons.)

  • Who can support, challenge or keep you accountable?

(Leadership is never a solo sport.)

  • What are the next 3 best steps?

(Execution builds belief. Belief builds momentum.)

This is more than a planning tool; it’s a high-performance mindset reset for every leader in your organisation.

💡 Executive Activity: Mid-Year Momentum Checklist

Final Thought: Set the Pace for a Strong Finish

Great leaders aren’t just strategic. They’re self-aware. They understand that alignment creates acceleration, and that how you show up as a leader in July will shape how your team performs in December.

Whether you’re planning FY25 strategy sessions, company offsites, or high-impact leadership meetings, this is your moment to reset the tone and finish the year with focus, energy and clarity.
